Objectives in Lesson Planning

Setting clear and specific objectives is essential for effective teaching. The SMART formula, with its emphasis on specificity and measurability, ensures that objectives are focused, motivating and conducive to assessment and evaluation. Avoiding common errors such as setting too many or too similar objectives contributes to a more streamlined and effective teaching approach.

Objectives in teaching are goals that specify what you want to achieve in a lesson or a series of lessons. They are more focused and detailed than aims. For example, if the aim is for students to learn how to read musical charts, objectives might include interpreting notes and recognizing standard musical symbols.

Setting clear objectives is crucial for effective teaching. It helps teachers clarify their goals and communicate them to students and other stakeholders. Objectives should outline what students should be able to do after learning and at what level of performance. It’s often recommended to make objectives SMART—Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant and Time-bound.

The SMART formula serves several purposes. It ensures that objectives are specific and time-bound distinguishing them from broader aims. It also makes objectives motivating and aids in assessment and evaluation.

Measurability is a key aspect of effective objectives. Using verbs like calculate, construct, define, demonstrate, indicate, list, name, perform, record, select or use makes it easier to observe and measure progress. Avoiding vague terms like understand or appreciate is important as these are challenging to assess.

Common mistakes in setting objectives include setting too many overall or having too many similar ones. The advantage of having objectives is lost if they become burdensome. To maintain focus, it’s helpful to include a variety of objectives. Two contrasting types are hunting objectives, where the expected response is clear and fishing objectives where the outcome is less certain. For instance, asking students to research specific dates in the history of the Philippines is a hunting objective while assigning a comparative study of two historical events is a fishing objective.
