Education’s Goals

In teaching, we often ponder the question: what are our objectives and what are we striving to impart to our students? Teachers in their diverse roles have a variety of objectives. Let’s break down some key objectives in education.

Firstly, there are objectives related to progression. Primary schools aim to equip students with skills necessary for secondary education while secondary schools focus on preparing students for further college and further study.

Another set of objectives revolves around formal qualifications. Primary schools aim to help students succeed in entrance exams for secondary school. Secondary schools strive for students to achieve good results for college and universities aim for strong degree outcomes such as diplomas and baccalaureates.

Beyond academic success, there’s the objective of preparing students for the workforce, teaching them the skills to secure and maintain a job or even start their own business. However, education is not solely about earning a living. Schools also strive to prepare students for various aspects of adult life such as being effective citizens, living healthy lifestyles, managing finances and eventually raising children. These objectives primarily focus on the future of the students. Additionally, there are objectives concerned with the present, including teaching study skills, promoting fair treatment, opposing bullying and discouraging substance use.

It’s crucial to recognize that educational objectives can be viewed from both the individual and societal perspectives. Societal aims may include passing down cultural heritage, ensuring citizens are well-versed in history, geography, customs and traditions. Society also desires a skilled workforce and healthy individuals. However, the emphasis on individual and societal objectives may differ. While individuals aim for personal development, societies may prioritize preserving heritage and fostering social cohesion. Educational objectives can be seen as falling on a continuum between individual and societal needs. This perspective also applies to specific groups within society, such as religious or ethnic communities, which may have their own educational aims based on preserving their traditions.

Another way to categorize educational objectives is by their impact on change. Education can be seen as a means of preserving tradition or as an agent of change. Traditional practices, like school Christmas plays, contribute to preserving heritage, while educational initiatives in various parts of the world introduce new techniques and ideas fostering change.
