What is evaluated in a classroom setting?

The purpose of assessment in the classroom is to support students in meeting the learning requirements. The curriculum includes learning standards that are made up of subject standards, performance standards, and learning competencies.

A. The fundamental knowledge and understanding that must be learned are identified and outlined in content standards. Within each learning strand, domain, theme, or component, they cover a specific range of sequential topics. The question “What should the learners know?” is answered by content standards.

B. Performance Standards outline the competencies that students must possess in respect to the subject standards and the incorporation of 21st-century competencies. The expression of knowledge, understanding, and skill integration during autonomous work or in partnership with others takes the shape of innovation, invention, and adding value to products/performance.

Performance standards provide answers to the following queries:

  • What can students do with what they already know?
  • What standard of performance must students meet?
  • “How effectively do students use their knowledge or understanding in various contexts?”
  • How do students put what they’ve learned or understood into practice?
  • How should students demonstrate their knowledge using instruments and measurements?

C. In every class and/or learning activity, students must demonstrate certain knowledge, understanding, skills, and attitudes, which are referred to as learning competencies.

D. Concept Development

The curriculum’s learning criteria show progressions in idea development. It might be helpful to operationalize these progressions using the Cognitive Process Dimensions, which were taken from Anderson & Krathwohl (2001). It offers a system for categorizing educational objectives, standards, and goals. A wide range of cognitive processes, from the simplest to the most complicated, are also defined, including remembering, understanding, applying, analyzing, evaluating, and creating.

Cognitive Process Dimensions

Remembering – The learner can identify, retrieve, recognize, replicate, list, memorize, repeat, and reproduce material and access pertinent knowledge from long-term memory.

Understanding – The learner can interpret, exhibit, classify, summarize, infer, compare, explain, paraphrase, and discuss oral, textual, and graphic communications to construct meaning.

Applying – The learner can interpret, exhibit, classify, summarize, infer, compare, explain, paraphrase, and discuss oral, textual, and graphic communications to construct meaning.

Analyzing – The learner can identify between components and understand how they relate to one another as well as to the overall structure and goal: discriminate, distinguish, compare, contrast, organize, outline, attribute, deconstruct

Evaluating – The student has the ability to judge and defend decisions using the following skills: coordinate, measure, detect, defend, judge, argue, debate, criticize, assess, and evaluate

Creating – The student can combine components to form a useful whole and develop a new idea or product using the following verbs: generate, hypothesis, plan, design, develop, produce, construct, formulate, assemble, design, conceive.

The modified Cognitive Process Dimensions may be used as a reference for developing lessons as well as for creating assessment tasks and activities in order to align the assessment process with the K–12 curriculum.
