Students and Assessment
The way we teach and assess students, along with the expectations set by society, can shape learning environments in ways that might not always encourage students to take risks, work hard or showcase their intellectual abilities. The impact of traditional teaching methods, especially when it comes to assessments, can sometimes create an atmosphere where students feel less motivated to tackle challenging tasks, especially if they know their performance will be judged by their teachers.
Researchers have found that students who believe their academic success is determined by fixed abilities or knowledge tend to focus more on meeting performance objectives. In simpler terms, they study hard to achieve good grades, please their teachers and impress their peers. This mindset can limit their willingness to take on difficult assignments, as they may fear failure.
In educational settings where the emphasis is on the value of student learning rather than just completing assignments, students who feel responsible for their academic performance are more likely to embrace learning goals. This means they are motivated by a growing sense of competence and mastery. As expected, these students tend to be more engaged in their academic work, exercise greater self-control, use effective learning strategies and possess a deeper understanding of the subject matter.
Studies on achievement motivation have provided insights into evaluation strategies that can better support innate motivation and learning goals. For example, when mistakes and errors are seen as a natural part of the learning process, motivation tends to increase. Additionally, providing feedback based on mastery rather than normative assessment has proven effective. For students with a learning orientation, viewing the teacher as a guide rather than just an evaluator fosters a positive learning environment.
Adopting evaluation strategies that emphasize learning over external judgments can enhance students’ intrinsic motivation, leading to more engaged and self-directed learners. Teachers play a crucial role in creating an environment that encourages learning and a shift in focus from grades to mastery can make a significant difference in students’ educational experiences.
