Proper assessment planning is essential for effective development of questioning techniques and thorough evaluation of learning. Instead of relying on spontaneous questions, teachers should plan ahead and consider listing appropriate questions on the reverse side of their lesson plans. These questions can then be used to assess learning at suitable moments. It is important to note that the order in which teachers ask these questions also carries significance. Say for example, the development of questions for the Grade 5 4th Periodical Tests.
While teachers may initially prepare questions in advance, they should be ready to adapt or create new questions on the spot based on the responses they receive. In other words, teachers need to have a questioning technique in place but remain flexible in developing tactics during the session. A useful approach could be to ask open-ended questions towards the end of one lesson, stimulating curiosity and anticipation for the next teaching session.
Why do teachers ask questions to learners? One reason is to engage learners in critical thinking during the session. Additionally, questions provide teachers with insights into the level of learning attained by the students. It is important to distinguish between closed and open questions. Closed questions typically elicit simple yes or no answers and are not particularly valuable for deepening understanding. On the other hand, open questions require learners to think and formulate a response. For example, if a teacher asks students to explain why traditional medicines work, the students must provide their own explanation in their own words. Once teachers have honed their questioning technique, they should consider question distribution. The following questioning technique can be employed in the upcoming Grade 5 4th Periodical Tests:
- Ask the question to the entire class.
- Pause, allowing all learners time to think or discuss the answer
- Name a learner to answer.
- Listen to the answer.
- Reward correct answers.
- Avoid ridiculing incorrect answers, either from the teacher or other learners.
- Ensure questions are spread across the class, giving everyone an opportunity to participate.
- Encourage participation from all students in a regulated manner, such as requesting a specific student to provide an example related to a previous response.
When distributing questions, teachers should be aware of potential drawbacks. If questions are posed in a predictable systematic order, learners who have already answered may become less engaged or disinterested. To change this, teachers should employ techniques that are less obvious. Additionally, it is important to resist favoring the same students when asking questions and consciously pay attention to those who are typically overlooked.
When posing questions, teachers can address various levels of cognitive understanding. For example, in the cognitive domain, teachers may ask:
- What are the main parts of a plant? (knowledge)
- What does this abrupt change in the data mean? (comprehension)
