Effective CPD in Small Schools

Small schools often face unique challenges in providing comprehensive professional development (CPD) opportunities for their teachers. However, the integration of external expertise can serve as a catalyst for change widening the knowledge pool and fostering innovative ideas.

External experts play a crucial role in guiding teachers in determining their CPD focus and accessing necessary support. By engaging with individuals outside the school, teachers can alleviate anxieties related to performance management issues and receive pedagogically expert guidance tailored to fit the demands of school life.

Peer support and discussion are valuable components of CPD but sustained contact with external parties facilitates ongoing motivation, feedback and progression. This collaborative approach ensures that issues are addressed promptly and encourages experimentation with new ideas.

Ownership of CPD is emphasized in effective schools, where teachers are empowered to select their own focus areas. This autonomy positively impacts motivation and enthusiasm, contrasting with imposed CPD activities that may lead to frustration and reluctance. Collaborative group discussions further enhance ownership, allowing professionals to steer the direction of their development.

Research suggests that sustained collaboration over approximately three months yields significant benefits including increased confidence, openness to new ideas and improved collaborative working. However, extending collaboration beyond this period does not yield additional advantages.

Active experimentation is crucial in maximizing the rewards of sustained collaboration emphasizing the importance of practical application alongside reflection and discussion. This approach promotes moral support and efficient task sharing particularly in smaller groups and within the school environment.

The integration of external expertise and collaborative CPD opportunities is essential for the professional growth of teachers in small schools. By fostering ownership, providing tailored support and encouraging active experimentation, schools can cultivate a culture of continuous learning and innovation among their staff.
