Public School Teachers’ Salary Hike to P30,000 Proposed

A new lawmaker has proposed to raise the basic salary of all public elementary and high school teachers to P30,000 regardless of their length of service.

Rep. Precious Hipolito-Castelo (2nd District, Quezon City) made the proposal through House Bill 1020.

Hipolito-Castelo underscored that the country’s public school teachers are underpaid and undervalued, despite the Constitution stipulating that there must be the “highest budgetary priority to education and the guarantee that teaching will attract and retain its rightful share of the best available talents through adequate remuneration and other means of job satisfaction and fulfillment.”

“With the ever-growing challenges that face our public school teachers, it is only fitting to accord them the salary increase they rightfully deserve,” Hipolito-Castelo said.

In her explanatory note, the lawmaker stated that the current salary grade of these teachers is way below their worth and their contribution to national development.

Hipolito-Castelo further said that the teaching profession entails sacrifice, self-denial, patience and hard work, as they deal with individuals of different behaviors and because they carry on their work even up to their own homes.

She further noted the significant role of teachers in society as they mold the youth into becoming future leaders.

The bill provides that the needed budget for the increase shall be incorporated in the appropriation for the Department of Education (DepEd) for each fiscal year.

Meanwhile, the Department of Budget and Management (DBM), in coordination with the DepEd, shall promulgate the implementing rules and regulations of the measure./ Molie Gonzales, News and Documentation Section-Press and Public Affairs Bureau/ House of Representatives of the Philippines.
