The Significance of DepEd Learning Activity Sheets (LAS)
The Department of Education (DepEd) introduced Learning Activity Sheets (LAS) to improve students’ learning experiences particularly in Science where many struggle. Science is often considered challenging due to its abstract concepts and technical terms which can affect students’ confidence and motivation. To overcome this challenge, teachers play a key role in using effective teaching strategies. Traditional methods often focus on memorization rather than practical application making it hard for students to relate scientific concepts to real life. This issue is evident in the low Mean Percentage Scores recorded in Science subjects of a certain National High School which is below the passing standard. The introduction of Contextualized Learning Activity Sheets (LAS) aims to make Science more engaging and relevant to students.
LAS align with the principles of contextualized and localized learning in the K–12 curriculum. By incorporating real-life examples relevant to students’ surroundings, these materials help learners grasp scientific concepts in a more meaningful way. They encourage active participation and critical thinking helping students apply their knowledge beyond the classroom. Worksheets included in LAS reinforce learning by allowing students to practice and assess their understanding independently.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, the transition to modular learning further emphasized the importance of LAS. With minimal teacher supervision, these materials provided structured guidance to ensure students continued learning at home. The effectiveness of LAS became evident in improved academic performance as shown by increased post-test scores among students who used contextualized learning materials.
DepEd’s Learning Activity Sheets are essential in improving Science education. Making lessons more engaging and accessible, LAS help students build confidence, enhance academic performance and develop a stronger appreciation for Science contributing to their overall learning and growth.
