Importance of Clear Teaching Goals in Effective Assessment
Effective classroom assessment starts with clear goals. Before teachers can evaluate student learning, they need to define what they aim to teach. Although this may sound simple, the challenge lies in the nature of their responses. When asked about their teaching goals, many teachers initially focus on course content such as stating, “My goal is to teach multiplication” or “I want to teach Noli me Tangere.” It often requires careful reflection for teachers to articulate the specific skills and competencies they intend to impart.
After some thought, teachers might rephrase their goals to something more targeted. For example, they could say, “I want my students to learn how to define and solve real-world problems in chemistry and physics using algebra” or “I aim to help students develop a critical appreciation of Noli me Tangere that encourages lifelong enjoyment of literature.” These refined goals, while still broad help teachers understand what should guide their selection of course content.
One useful tool for teachers is the teaching goals inventory, which helps them pinpoint specific teaching objectives they wish to assess. With clear goals in place, teachers can better decide what feedback to gather. They can utilize classroom assessment techniques, which act as a collection of “tools” to gather information on their teaching effectiveness.

Classroom assessment techniques play a dual role: they are both assessment methods and teaching strategies. They enhance student learning by focusing attention on key subject elements, offering additional practice in essential skills and training students to become self-aware and independent learners. To foster self-directed, lifelong learners, students must receive opportunities for feedback on their learning before formal evaluations. Additionally, they need instruction and practice in self-assessment to truly grasp their progress. Defining clear teaching goals and using effective assessment techniques are vital for successful student learning.
