The Importance of Classroom Assessment and Timely Feedback

In every classroom, teachers constantly observe and respond to students’ questions, expressions and body language, often without even realizing it. This instinctive monitoring helps teachers form judgments about student understanding but these impressions are usually unspoken and unconfirmed by the students themselves. Although teachers make assumptions about students’ grasp of the material, these assumptions often go untested. Now see: GRADE 1 Matatag – 2nd Periodical Tests with TOS | SY 2024 – 2025

While teachers collect valuable information through questions, quizzes, homework, and exams, this feedback is frequently given too late to influence students’ learning effectively. Many students see tests and graded activities as “finished,” so any feedback that follows doesn’t motivate them to improve. Therefore, assessments before major tests—such as periodical tests and finals—can provide the most beneficial feedback.

Classroom assessments are vital for giving early feedback. Each interaction with the teacher whether consciously noted or not provides students with insights into their performance. Informal discussions with teachers often hold valuable hints, tips and practical advice which can significantly impact student learning. In many cases, oral feedback has a stronger effect than written comments, especially because it is immediate and directly tied to recent student work or activities. This immediacy helps students relate the feedback directly to their efforts, making it easier to absorb and act upon.

For feedback to be effective, teachers should make it a part of every lesson plan. They can share the structure of the lesson with students including points where feedback will be provided to encourage active participation. Teachers should also motivate students to take notes during oral feedback sessions and act on these suggestions within the lesson’s timeframe. By doing so, students leave each class with a clear understanding of their progress and areas to work on.

Classroom assessment and feedback foster a supportive learning environment. When teachers show students that they believe in each learner’s potential to improve, students are more likely to engage, learn and aim for progress based on their past performance.
