The Significance of DepEd Learning Activity Sheets (LAS)
The COVID-19 pandemic caused a major disruption in education affecting millions of students worldwide. In the Philippines, the Department of Education (DepEd) introduced different learning methods to ensure that students could continue their studies despite school closures. One of the most effective tools used during this period was the Learning Activity Sheet (LAS). Switching to modular learning presented several challenges. Initially, the government relied on Self-Learning Modules (SLMs) which contained comprehensive lessons but were often too lengthy. Many students struggled to finish all the activities leading to incomplete work and disengagement. To address this issue, DepEd introduced LAS—shorter, more focused worksheets that emphasized key concepts. These materials helped students grasp lessons more effectively while reducing their workload.
Science education in particular, benefited from LAS, as the Philippines has consistently ranked low in international assessments like PISA. Teaching Science through remote learning proved difficult but LAS helped simplify lessons by breaking them into manageable, activity-based tasks. For instance, teachers developed LAS specifically for Science & Technology to ensure students could understand and apply scientific concepts even without face-to-face instruction.
Although schools have resumed in-person classes, LAS remain valuable. Teachers continue to use them as supplementary learning tools to reinforce lessons and assess students’ understanding. Their structured format makes them effective for reviewing essential topics and ensuring mastery of learning skills.
LAS have played a crucial role in bridging learning gaps especially during crises like the pandemic. Their effectiveness highlights the importance of flexible and student-friendly teaching materials. Moving forward, continuous evaluation and improvement of LAS can further support DepEd’s mission of delivering quality education to all Filipino students.
