When students work with various high-quality lesson exemplars, they see different ways to approach assignments. This helps them recognize what constitutes quality work, boosting their learning and performance. Many students find exemplars more helpful than rubrics or criteria lists because they offer a clearer picture of the desired outcome.
Besides improving understanding, Lesson Exemplars build confidence and reduce anxiety. By studying these examples, students gain the skills and knowledge needed to complete tasks successfully. However, there are concerns about the potential downsides. Some worry that using exemplars might discourage creativity and promote surface-level learning. To address these concerns, teachers can provide diverse exemplars and hold discussions on academic integrity and originality.
Teachers can introduce Lesson Exemplars after students have started their tasks to encourage ownership and commitment. This approach allows students to use the exemplars for comparison and improvement without relying solely on them. Additionally, providing exemplars early in the term can prevent last-minute panic and guide students before assessments.
While Lesson Exemplars are useful, they should not be the only strategy used to enhance learning. Teachers must balance their use with other methods to avoid limiting creativity. Lesson Exemplars should complement a broader educational plan, helping students understand expectations and succeed without stifling their creative potential.
