Self-regulation is key for students to manage their learning and performance effectively. It involves students taking charge of their thoughts, emotions and behaviors to reach academic goals. By incorporating Lesson Exemplars (LE) into education, teachers can help students build self-regulation skills like decision-making and self-monitoring. Self-regulation has three phases: Anticipation, Performance Control and Self-reflection. In the Anticipation phase, students analyze tasks, set goals and plan strategies to achieve them. They think about how the final task should look and decide on steps for short-term and long-term goals. This phase also involves self-motivational beliefs, like self-efficacy where strong belief in their abilities boosts motivation and persistence, even in tough situations.

The Performance Control phase is about self-observation and self-control. Here, students track their progress and adjust their actions, thoughts and emotions as needed. This includes academic self-monitoring, where students assess how their methods affect learning. Self-control techniques, like seeking feedback and adjusting their environment help them stay focused and motivated.

In the Self-reflection phase, students evaluate completed tasks by comparing them to their goals and standards. They reflect on their successes and failures, which shapes their motivation for future tasks. This phase prompts cognitive and emotional responses that influence how they approach similar tasks later.

Lesson Exemplars guide students in honing these skills, preparing them for advanced courses and real-world challenges. A lesson exemplar is a sample that illustrates a broader concept, aiding students in understanding criteria and improving performance. In higher education, lesson exemplars are widely used across subjects to enhance teaching and learning.

Research shows that exemplars help bridge learning gaps for both teachers and students. Developing these involves collaboration, promoting student-centered learning, and aligning lessons with students’ backgrounds. While lesson exemplars are valuable, teachers should consider their educational worth and potential drawbacks. Overreliance on exemplars may stifle creativity, so they should be used thoughtfully as part of a broader toolkit. Deciding to use lesson exemplars should come after careful discussion of their benefits and limitations to ensure effective and meaningful learning outcomes.
