Good day fellow Teachers. We’ve been together for three years now. We had a lot of struggles in our beloved profession but we made it to this new school year together – supporting and sharing our knowledge for the welfare of each other. We are always there for each other as we dream of a smooth and productive school year. Together we will withstand any challenges. • Solon Aims to Repeal “Continuing Professional Development Act of 2016”

Representative. Lorna C. Silverio filed House Bill No. Hb03894 : An Act Repealing Republic Act No. 10912, Otherwise Known As The “Continuing Professional Development Act Of 2016” (CPD Law). It was already referred by the House Committee on Rules to the Committee on Higher and Technical Education on August 20, 2019. It was also Secondarily Referred to the Committee(S) on Civil Service and Professional Regulation.

According to her,  most of our Professional Regulation Commission registered and licensed professionals are having a hard time to comply with the law as defined further in the Internal Rules and Regulations last March 2017. They simply described the CPD as costly, unrealistic, and ineffective due to the fact that the professional is looking for compliance rather than for continuing professional development. There are reports of professionals having to travel to various points of the country just to attend seminars and training courses that would earn them only about one third of the required credit units, and in some cases, the overall cost, which covers registration fees, airfare and accommodation, reach as high as Php20,000.00 pesos. There are also claims of some seminars and training courses turn out to be unrelated to the field of expertise of attendees.

• Sen. Poe’s Version of “No-Homework Law” Based on Findings

Senator Grace Poe filed her version of No-Homework Law thru Senate Bill No. 966 -An Act Establishing A No-Homework Policy for All Primary and Secondary Schools in the Country. It was read on First Reading and Referred to the Committee on Basic Education, Arts and Culture last August 28, 2019. Legislative status: Pending in the Committee (8/28/2019).

According to her: Not only that more homework does not translate to better student performance, It also gives additional stress to students, teachers and parents. More homework gives additional workload to our already overworked teachers and takes away valuable time that could have been spent with family and other activities.

Hence, this bill aims to limit the homework given to students from Kinder to Grade 12 during weekdays and prohibit the same on weekends to safeguard and promote the welfare of teachers and school children, protect them from conditions that may adversely affect their health and their right to a balanced life, and uphold equality among students across different socio-economic backgrounds.

This bill, when enacted into law, will institutionalize and expand the Department of Education (DepEd) Memorandum Circular No. 392, s. 2010 which advised teachers to limit the giving of homework to public elementary school pupils on weekdays and to refrain from giving homework on weekends.
