Quarter 2 Week 3 Lesson Exemplars (LE) Compilation SY 2024 – 2025

Providing Lesson Exemplars (LE) can significantly boost student grades and engagement. In a study, students attended voluntary workshops where they reviewed lesson exemplars related to upcoming assessments. They were given grading criteria and asked to assess two exemplars from past students who had completed the same course. The exemplars represented different achievement levels. The study showed that students who attended these workshops saw notable improvements in their grades compared to those who did not participate. In response to this success, exam exemplars covering a range of grades were shared with students throughout the semester. These exemplars taken from previous students were annotated by teachers to align with the published grading standards. This process not only improved grades particularly at the highest levels, but also increased student involvement with the subject.

Lesson exemplars clarify assessment criteria and promote transparency in grading. They help students understand what is expected in assignments, such as essays or reports, by providing real examples of varying quality. When students study these models, they can improve their approach to tasks, which reduces anxiety and builds confidence. Many students find exemplars more useful than rubrics because they show what a successful outcome looks like.

However, some critics argue that over-reliance on exemplars might limit creativity or encourage surface learning. To address this concern, teachers can offer a variety of exemplars and foster discussions on originality. Introducing exemplars after students begin their work can also ensure that they retain ownership of their learning while benefiting from guidance.

Lesson exemplars are a valuable tool for improving student performance and engagement. When used alongside other teaching strategies such as lesson study, they provide a clearer understanding of expectations and enhance the learning experience without stifling creativity.
