Lesson study is a teaching strategy where group of teachers collaboratively plans and researches a lesson. They create a detailed lesson plan, outlining the objectives, expected student responses and how the lesson will help learners grasp specific concepts. Afterward, one teacher from the group teaches the lesson, while the others observe making notes on how well it meets the expectations. Later, they meet to discuss improvements. One key component of effective lesson planning is the development of enhanced Lesson Exemplars. See Quarter 2 Week 2 Lesson Exemplars (LE) Compilation SY 2024 – 2025. These are detailed lesson plans that include activities designed to cater to the diverse needs of students. Benjamin Franklin’s quote, “Tell me and I forget, teach me and I may remember, involve me and I learn,” perfectly describes the value of lesson exemplars. By showing students examples of previous work, these exemplars give them a clearer understanding of what teachers expect.
Lesson Exemplars (LE) provide authentic samples of student work demonstrating various levels of quality or competence. These models help students understand assignment requirements such as essays, reports or case studies. By studying high-quality exemplars, students can improve their approach to tasks and understand what makes good work. This boosts their performance, reduces anxiety and builds confidence. Many students find exemplars more helpful than rubrics, as they provide a clearer picture of the expected outcome.
However, some critics worry that relying too much on exemplars could limit creativity or encourage surface-level learning. To address this, teachers can introduce diverse exemplars and foster discussions about originality. Introducing exemplars after students have started their work can also promote ownership while still guiding them.
While Lesson Exemplars are helpful, they should be used alongside other teaching methods to ensure a balanced and creative learning environment. By using lesson study and exemplars thoughtfully, teachers can help students understand expectations and improve their learning experience.
