Key Features of the MATATAG Kindergarten Curriculum

The updated Kindergarten Curriculum Framework outlines how its educational elements work to achieve the goals mandated by RA 10157, known as the Kindergarten Education Act. According to this law, Kindergarten must adequately prepare children for elementary school. This stage is crucial for young learners as it is a time when their ability to absorb knowledge is at its peak. Strengthening foundational skills while promoting social, emotional, and values development is essential. The State ensures a learner-oriented education that meets the needs of children, enhances their cognitive and social skills, and accommodates diverse learners through appropriate languages of instruction.

The curriculum design focuses on the unique child at its center, described as an active learner. This approach sees the child as a blossoming flower, developing best without being forced. Through engagement, exploration, critical thinking, and discovery, children are supported in their learning journey. This approach equips Filipino Kindergarten learners with 21st-century skills, empowering them to take responsibility for their own learning.

Incorporating a play-based approach and developmentally appropriate practices, the curriculum helps children gain knowledge, skills, and attitudes (KSA) along with basic concepts. The curriculum integrates activities across different learning experiences related to various themes. It aims to foster creative thinking, collaboration, effective reasoning, and clear communication, which are essential for lifelong learning.

The MATATAG Kindergarten Curriculum Guide emphasizes developmental domains such as Literacy, Language and Communication, Cognitive, Socio-emotional, Aesthetic/Creative, Physical Health and Motor, and Values Development. These are presented thematically in learning areas like Makabansa, Languages, Mathematics, GMRC, and Science in Grade 3, helping children transition smoothly to higher grades.

The redesigned curriculum promotes a learner-centered, integrated, developmentally appropriate, play-based, and nationalistic approach. It aims to develop holistic learners with foundational skills in physical, social, emotional, cognitive, and values development. Curricular themes include Knowing Who We Are and Our Families, Exploring Our Community, Appreciating Our Country, and Caring for Our World, each contributing to a child’s overall development.

Kindergarten learners are assessed continuously through observation of their work and performance. The Philippine Early Childhood Development (ECD) Checklist is used at the start of the school year to identify developmental stages and potential delays. The Progress Report, aligned with learning competencies from the Kindergarten Curriculum Guide, evaluates the overall performance of learners each quarter.
