A lesson exemplar is an example used to show a broader idea, process, or principle that helps students grasp general concepts and apply them to solve problems. These examples are useful for explaining assessment criteria, deepening understanding, and improving performance. In higher education, using exemplars is common across different subjects to support effective teaching and learning.

Research in biology education shows that creating lesson exemplars can help address learning gaps for teachers and students. This process involves working together to improve student-focused learning. Culturally relevant teaching also requires designing lessons that connect with students’ backgrounds, highlighting the need for comprehensive teaching approaches.

The new idea is to carefully consider using exemplars in a scholarly way. This means thinking about their educational value, but also being aware that overusing them might limit creativity. Exemplars should not be seen as the only solution for quality assessment. Instead, they are part of a larger set of tools that support students.

Exemplars offer unique benefits, helping students understand what is expected of them in a clear, contextual, and supportive manner. Whether or not to use exemplars in a specific subject should be decided by the educators teaching that subject. This choice should come after a thorough discussion of the benefits and potential downsides of using exemplars. Rushing to create exemplars without careful consideration can lead to ineffective results.
