Creating clear expectations for student learning is a crucial first step in the assessment process. These expectations, also known as learning goals, should align with the departmental mission statement. Once these learning goals are set, the next phase involves developing an assessment plan. This plan includes several key steps:
- Choosing or Creating Assessment Methods: Select or develop appropriate ways to measure student learning.
- Implementing Assessment Methods: Apply these methods and gather data on how well students are meeting the learning goals.
- Analyzing and Using Results: Review the assessment data to improve teaching and learning.
- Evaluating the Assessment Process: Examine how effective the assessment methods were and make necessary adjustments.
A successful assessment program starts with a clear understanding of its objectives. The terms “goals” and “objectives” often describe what students should learn. Goals are broad outcomes like developing communication or problem-solving skills. For example, a general goal might be “improve students’ ability to communicate effectively.”
Objectives on the other hand are specific skills or attitudes that support these broader goals. For instance, an objective for a first-year writing course might be “students should be able to construct a compelling argument.” Objectives are detailed and actionable reflecting the broader goals in a practical way.
Setting clear expectations and creating a structured assessment plan are essential for evaluating and enhancing student learning. Understanding the difference between goals and objectives helps ensure that both broad outcomes and specific skills are effectively addressed.
