What to Expect in Grade 3 Quarter 3 Lesson Exemplars

The Grade 3 Quarter 3 Lesson Exemplars under the MATATAG Curriculum continue the mission of nurturing learners who are mahusay, mapagkalinga, matatag and handa sa pagbabago. Quarter 3 is designed to build upon the foundational skills established in the previous quarters while deepening pupils’ understanding of communication, problem-solving, scientific observation and moral development. Each lesson integrates literacy, numeracy, environmental awareness and Filipino values ensuring that academic competence and character formation grow hand in hand.

Across eight weeks of integrative learning, pupils strengthen their academic foundations while developing empathy, faith and love for their country. Through stories, songs, experiments and reflection, learners not only gain knowledge but also learn to live with purpose, becoming competent, compassionate and proud young Filipinos.

This quarter aims to strengthen Grade 3 learners’ literacy and numeracy skills while cultivating respect, cooperation and love for the community and nation. Pupils will engage in lessons that connect classroom learning to real-life applications, reading meaningful stories, solving practical math problems and performing experiments that develop curiosity and observation. Guided by the MATATAG framework, Quarter 3 seeks to produce learners who are not only academically skilled but also compassionate and responsible citizens.

Grade 3 Quarter 3 Learning Focus and Key Subject Matter

Each subject in Quarter 3 carries its unique focus, yet all work together to achieve holistic learning:

English and Filipino: Learners explore local and cultural literature, such as Why the Firefly Glows, Ang Punong Kawayan, Alamat ng Sipag at Tiyaga, and Si Kaye at ang mga Kaibigang Dolphin. These texts develop vocabulary, comprehension and grammar skills while nurturing moral reflection. Pupils learn to identify cause and effect, sequence events and compose compound and imperative sentences. By the end of the quarter, they are expected to communicate clearly, use high-frequency words confidently and express ideas through short paragraphs and creative writing tasks.

Mathematics: Quarter 3 deepens understanding of data representation, multiplication and patterns. Pupils learn to gather and interpret information through pictographs, bar graphs and real-world data. Lessons progress toward mastering multiplication tables (6–9), applying multiplication properties and identifying increasing and decreasing patterns. These competencies train pupils to reason logically and apply mathematical thinking to everyday tasks.

Science: Lessons revolve around motion, light and sound. Pupils discover how objects move through pushing and pulling, how light behaves when it strikes materials and how sound and light transmit information. Through experiments using mirrors, flashlights and everyday objects, learners practice observation and measurement, linking scientific principles with real-life experiences.

GMRC and Makabansa: These subjects emphasize compassion, unity, patriotism and inclusivity. Pupils learn respect for people with disabilities, appreciation for modern-day heroes and love for country through songs, pledges and storytelling. Activities foster faith, prayerfulness, empathy and national pride, helping pupils internalize values essential for good citizenship.

By the end of the quarter, learners are expected to demonstrate fluency in communication, accuracy in computation, awareness of scientific phenomena and a strong moral compass guided by respect, cooperation and patriotism.

  • Presentation: Teachers introduce key concepts through storytelling, visuals, or demonstrations.
  • Exploration and Practice: Pupils participate in reading activities, experiments, computations and group tasks that reinforce learning.
  • Application: Learners connect lessons to real-life experiences, solving practical problems, composing reflections, or dramatizing values-based scenarios.
  • Reflection: Each lesson concludes with sharing or journaling, encouraging pupils to express insights and apply moral lessons in daily life.
  • This structured approach ensures active engagement, critical thinking and values formation in every subject.
