What are the Challenges and Limitations of DepEd Lesson Exemplar (LE)?
The DepEd Lesson Exemplar (LE) system presents several challenges and limitations despite its structured approach to teaching. One significant issue is how well the exemplars can be adapted to different student levels and classroom settings. Although the LEs are typically designed for specific grade levels, teachers often face difficulties in adjusting them to meet the needs of their students. For instance, some students may require more support or changes in how content and tasks are delivered which limits the effectiveness of uniform lesson plans in diverse classrooms. A Science toolkit highlights this issue, offering a variety of inquiry tasks designed for various developmental stages, from Kindergarten to Grade 8. These tasks cover different science topics such as physical science, life science and earth science. However, they need to be tailored to suit students’ varying levels of understanding. Teachers must modify aspects like materials, data collection and representations, which can be both time-consuming and difficult especially when addressing the diverse needs of a whole class.
Moreover, the focus on broad unifying concepts like “Cause-Effect” or “Patterns” can sometimes be too complex for younger students making it harder for them to grasp the main ideas. Although these concepts are important for linking lessons throughout the year, they may not always match students’ current cognitive abilities, creating a challenge in effective teaching.
Additionally, while worksheets and other materials are used to reinforce lessons, they may not always engage students fully. Though helpful for reviewing concepts, worksheets often lack interactive elements which many students need to deeply connect with the material. This can hinder their understanding and fail to promote the inquiry-based learning that the Exemplars aim to achieve.
While DepEd Lesson Exemplars offer a useful framework, their success largely depends on how well teachers can adapt them to their students’ diverse needs and incorporate additional materials that enhance learning.
