As the second quarter of the school year begins, Grade 1 learners progress from foundational skills toward broader applications in reading, writing, numeracy and values education. This stage is a critical bridge between early literacy and numeracy foundations and the development of deeper comprehension, problem-solving and social awareness. To support this transition, the Department of Education (DepEd) provides Grade 1 Quarter 2 Lesson Exemplars (LEs) structured, curriculum-aligned guides designed to assist teachers, inform parents and ensure that learners receive consistent and developmentally appropriate instruction.
What Are Grade 1 Quarter 2 Lesson Exemplars?
Grade 1 Quarter 2 Lesson Exemplars are not ordinary lesson outlines. They are carefully crafted instructional resources aligned with the DepEd MATATAG Curriculum and the Most Essential Learning Competencies (MELCs). Each exemplar ensures that classroom instruction meets the Content Standards, Performance Standards, and Learning Competencies required for this level.
These exemplars serve as reliable roadmaps for teaching, providing detailed lesson flows, structured activities and practical strategies that promote mastery of essential Grade 1 skills.
These lesson exemplars provide clear direction and time-saving support. Each exemplar offers a well-structured flow of activities, ensuring that teachers deliver lessons systematically while covering all required standards. By using Grade 1 Quarter 2 Lesson Exemplars, teachers can balance instructional consistency with opportunities for creative teaching strategies that meet learners’ diverse needs.
Focus Areas in Grade 1 Quarter 2 Lesson Exemplars
The Grade 1 Quarter 2 Lesson Exemplars SY 2025–2026 cover Weeks 1–8 and are sequenced to strengthen and extend skills developed in the first quarter.
- Language. Emphasis on constructing simple sentences, using common expressions, and practicing early writing tasks. By Week 4, learners begin writing short descriptive sentences to express ideas clearly.
- Reading and Literacy. Reinforcement of decoding skills, vocabulary expansion and comprehension of short passages. By Week 6, inferencing is introduced, enabling learners to connect ideas beyond literal meaning.
- Mathematics. Extension from numbers 1–20 to numbers up to 100. Introduction to basic addition, subtraction and recognition of patterns. Week 7 highlights real-life problem solving, ensuring learners apply math in practical contexts.
- Makabansa. Lessons focus on symbols of nationhood, community roles and Filipino identity. Week 3 emphasizes the importance of national holidays and their relevance in everyday life.
- Good Manners and Right Conduct (GMRC). Weekly lessons highlight respect, responsibility and discipline. By Week 5, activities encourage learners to demonstrate kindness through tasks such as helping with classroom chores.
Real-Life Application of Lessons. Each lesson exemplar goes beyond academic content, emphasizing real-life scenarios. For example: Subtraction may be taught through relatable tasks, such as “If you have 10 mangoes and share 3 with a friend, how many are left?”
Reading activities often involve short stories that reflect Filipino culture and values. GMRC lessons encourage learners to practice courtesy, honesty, and cooperation in school and at home. This contextualized approach ensures that learners not only acquire knowledge but also understand its application in everyday life.
Alignment with DepEd Standards
The Grade 1 Quarter 2 Lesson Exemplars are structured according to DepEd’s learning framework:
- Content Standards – What learners need to know.
- Performance Standards – What learners should be able to demonstrate.
- Learning Competencies – The specific skills learners must master each week.
Quarter 2 strengthens foundational skills from the first quarter:
- Reading moves from sound and word recognition to full comprehension.
- Mathematics grows from basic counting to understanding number relationships and operations.
- GMRC and Makabansa provide moral and civic grounding during these formative years.

How to Use the Exemplars Effectively
To maximize the impact of Grade 1 Quarter 2 Lesson Exemplars, teachers and parents are encouraged to:
- Adapt to learner context: Adjust activities and examples to reflect familiar names, places, or situations.
- Integrate with LAS (Learning Activity Sheets): Reinforce competencies through structured practice at home.
- Blend with DLLs (Daily Lesson Logs): Use exemplars as the foundation while customizing classroom pacing.
- Support diverse learning modalities: Apply them flexibly in face-to-face, modular, or blended learning environments.
- Reinforce learning through play: Use counting sticks, story role-play, and interactive games.
- Document learner progress: Pair exemplars with formative assessments to identify areas for reteaching.
- Collaborate with parents: Provide simplified versions of weekly lessons so that parents can extend learning at home.
