Overview of Grade 5 Quarter 3 Week 1 Lesson Exemplar
The Grade 5 Quarter 3 Week 1 Lesson Exemplar introduces learners to integrated academic and values-based learning experiences under the MATATAG Curriculum. Lessons across Filipino, English, Mathematics, Araling Panlipunan, Science, GMRC, EPP and MAPEH focus on real-life application, critical thinking and social awareness. This week emphasizes foundational competencies, communication, computation, creativity and compassion forming part of the holistic Grade 5 learner profile envisioned by DepEd.
Grade 5 Quarter 3 Week 1 Key Learning Areas and Focus
By the end of the week, pupils are expected to demonstrate both subject-specific knowledge and interdisciplinary understanding.
Filipino: Identify denotative and connotative meanings, use pang-uring pamilang patakda, and express children’s rights through poetry and multimedia. In Filipino, learners interpret the poem Ako, Bilang Isang Bata, connecting its theme to children’s rights and responsibilities.
English: Determine textual coherence between story elements by noting important details, recognizing flashbacks, and inferring reasons behind events. English lessons feature The Nian Monster, a Chinese New Year story that builds cultural appreciation, comprehension, and critical reasoning.
Mathematics: Collect and represent bivariate data using double bar and line graphs to interpret real-life information such as economic trends. Mathematics integrates graph construction and interpretation with real-life data such as prices and wages, promoting numeracy linked to SDG 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth).
Science: Understand the uses and proper handling of medicines, differentiate types of drugs and apply safety measures to prevent misuse. Science develops health awareness by explaining the safe and proper use of medicines, differentiating over-the-counter, prescription, and complementary drugs.
Araling Panlipunan: Explain the meaning and causes of colonialism, analyze Spanish colonization in the Philippines and appreciate Filipino perseverance during foreign rule. Araling Panlipunan examines the meaning and causes of colonialism and its effects on Filipino identity and independence.
GMRC: Practice compassion and care for the sick and elderly, linking lessons to Sustainable Development Goal 3 on good health and well-being. GMRC cultivates empathy and compassion through lessons on caring for the sick and the elderly, connecting to SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-being).
EPP: Apply basic home and livelihood management skills emphasizing responsibility and productivity. EPP (Edukasyong Pantahanan at Pangkabuhayan) strengthens responsibility and productivity by engaging learners in household and community tasks that apply practical skills in work, cleanliness, and orderliness—emphasizing diligence and cooperation as life values.
MAPEH: Explore Philippine music and arts from the 16th–17th centuries, recognizing the blend of indigenous and Spanish influences, while learning rhythmic movements that promote community wellness. In Music and Arts, pupils explore indigenous and Spanish-influenced art forms during the 16th and 17th centuries, recognizing cultural continuity and change. PE and Health focus on rhythmic movements and physical wellness, encouraging safe habits and active participation to maintain a healthy lifestyle.
3rd Quarter Instructional Flow and Lesson Design
Each exemplar follows a four-day progressive sequence of review, development, application and evaluation ensuring mastery and engagement. Teachers begin with activating prior knowledge through games, songs, or short discussions. Guided and independent activities such as storytelling, surveys, role-playing and graphing exercises allow learners to apply lessons in meaningful contexts. Group tasks like composing short poems, classifying historical events and designing health posters foster collaboration and creativity. Reflection activities at the end of each lesson reinforce self-awareness, values integration, and learner accountability.
