How Important is DepEd Lesson Exemplar (LE)?
DepEd Lesson Exemplars (LE) play an important role in helping teachers create lessons that align with educational standards ensuring that students achieve the desired learning outcomes. The backward-design method used in the DepEd framework, similar to the exemplars model for science supports teachers in planning lessons by first selecting standards and then designing activities that target both knowledge and skill development. The first step is to choose the standards that will be assessed during the unit. Teachers should aim to select a manageable number of standards, balancing content and skills and ensuring that these standards can be covered in the time available. After selecting the standards, teachers create essential questions that guide the unit’s focus. These questions are open-ended encouraging students to explore big ideas and concepts while engaging them in critical thinking.
The next step involves designing culminating tasks that will assess whether students have met the standards. These tasks, such as creating a project that demonstrates scientific concepts allow students to apply their knowledge in meaningful ways. Such activities are performance-based and provide an opportunity for students to showcase their understanding.
In addition to culminating tasks, teachers develop various learning activities including worksheets to guide students through the learning process. These activities help students build knowledge and skills progressively. They begin with introductory activities that activate prior knowledge followed by instructional tasks that deepen understanding. Assessment activities including worksheets and projects track students’ progress throughout the unit.
Finally, student products and performances are evaluated using clear rubrics which help both students and teachers measure success. These rubrics provide students with concrete feedback on their work allowing for self-assessment and reflection.
