What is a Daily Lesson Log (DLL)?

A Daily Lesson Log (DLL) is a key tool for teachers providing a detailed plan for each lesson. It outlines the lesson’s objectives, activities and materials needed to achieve these goals. At times, particular classroom challenges such as discipline or working with textbooks may require a special approach making these tasks particularly relevant and useful for certain lessons.

A well-crafted lesson plan should focus on developing both cognitive and procedural knowledge. This helps students grasp concepts and understand the reasoning behind them which is important for applying knowledge in problem-solving. Additionally, lesson planning should consider the varying abilities of students and the most appropriate teaching methods for the content being covered. Teachers are encouraged to ask questions like, “What should students know by the end of the lesson?” and “What should they be able to do?” These questions help teachers ensure that lesson objectives align with both the curriculum and the needs of the students.

Specific learning objectives should be expressed clearly using measurable language that allows teachers to assess students’ success or failure. Tasks should challenge students to describe, evaluate, compare, contrast, apply and differentiate. In turn, teachers can assess whether their students have mastered these skills. Properly conceptualized learning tasks and activities help unify student behaviors, support social dynamics and clarify the most effective types of assessment for the deliverables.

Daily lesson planning is a critical element in effective teaching. Carefully considering objectives, learning tasks and student needs, teachers can design lessons that encourage active learning and holistic development supporting both individual and collective self-expression. The ultimate goal is to create an authentic and context-specific learning environment that fosters student growth and development.
