The Department of Education (DepEd) has released DepEd Order No. 010, s. 2024, which outlines the Policy Guidelines on the Implementation of the MATATAG Curriculum. This aims to provide clear directions and articulate its features, design and standards, ensuring that all educational institutions adhere to the prescribed minimum standards.
The MATATAG Curriculum is set to be implemented across all public and private schools, state universities and colleges (SUCs), local universities and colleges (LUCs) and Philippine Schools Overseas (PSOs) that offer basic education. It aligns with the Ambisyon Natin 2040, equipping Filipino learners with 21st-century skills to excel in both local and global job markets. The curriculum promotes inclusivity, global citizenship, diversity and a future-oriented mindset, aiming to develop lifelong, peace-loving learners who embody the core values of Maka-Diyos, Makatao, Makakalikasan, and Makabansa.
Teachers and instructional leaders will use this order as a primary guide for planning and delivering instruction. For teachers, it covers selecting subject matter, implementing teaching strategies, using learning resources and applying assessment tools. Instructional leaders will create supervisory and management plans to oversee instructional delivery, monitor learning gains, and provide technical assistance to teachers and school heads.
The order also amends DepEd Order No. 021, s. 2019, specifically in the areas of Elementary Education, Secondary Education and the Mother Tongue-based Multilingual Education Program Implementation.
This Order shall cover the implementation of the MATATAG Curriculum, shall be implemented by phase starting with Kindergarten, Grades 1, 4, and 7 in School Year (SY) 2024-2025. For other grade levels, the curriculum shall be implemented as follows: Grades 2, 3, 5, and 8 in SY 2025-2026; Grades 6, 9, and 10 in SY 2026-2027.
All conflicting orders, memoranda, and related issuances are repealed, rescinded, or modified accordingly. Immediate dissemination and strict compliance with this order is directed by DepEd Secretary Sonny Angara.
Scope of Implementation
The MATATAG Curriculum will be phased in, starting with Kindergarten, Grades 1, 4, and 7 in the 2024-2025 school year. Grades 2, 3, 5, and 8 will follow in 2025-2026, and Grades 6, 9, and 10 in 2026-2027. Separate guidelines will be issued for Grades 11 and 12. The curriculum will be implemented by all schools nationwide, including those in administrative and autonomous regions and Philippine schools overseas.
The curriculum serves as a blueprint for teachers to align lesson plans with content and performance standards, learning competencies, pedagogies, assessments and resources. Instructional leaders will create supervisory and management plans to support teachers and school heads, monitor learning gains and provide technical assistance. Parents and other stakeholders will also be involved in supporting the curriculum’s goals.
The MATATAG Curriculum will be adapted for inclusive education programs like Special Needs Education, Madrasah Education, Indigenous Peoples Education, and the Special Curricular Program. The curriculum for the Alternative Learning System (ALS) will also align with the MATATAG Curriculum, with existing guidelines remaining in effect until further notice.
Teacher Development
The MATATAG Curriculum envisions teachers as 21st-century educators who continually develop their skills and knowledge. Teachers will perform roles as instructional designers, lifelong learning advocates, promoters of ethical digital literacy and catalysts of transformation. They will design and deliver engaging lessons, foster essential skills, use digital tools responsibly, model ethical behavior and support student learning through community engagement and innovative teaching practices.
