Streamlined Curriculum Focuses on Key Skills

The new MATATAG curriculum for Grade 1 has been simplified from seven to five learning areas, concentrating on enhancing literacy and numeracy. The new areas include Language, Reading and Literacy, and Makabansa. These subjects have been thoughtfully developed to replace the previous ones.

Language

The Language area is a new subject in the Grade 1 MATATAG Curriculum. It emphasizes developing oral language skills in the student’s first language, which is crucial for building literacy and learning other subjects. This curriculum values the role of the first language, recognizing over 180 languages in the country, including sign and visual languages, and those of indigenous groups. By focusing on the first language, children can establish a strong foundation for literacy and further learning.

Reading and Literacy

The Reading and Literacy area aims to develop essential reading skills needed for early literacy. It focuses on building phonemic awareness, decoding skills, and recognizing sight words to help students read fluently in their first language. The curriculum also introduces comprehension strategies to help students understand and engage with texts, identify main ideas, and make simple inferences. Additionally, it aims to foster a positive reading attitude by exposing students to age-appropriate and engaging texts, nurturing a love for reading.

Makabansa

Makabansa is a new subject for Grades 1-3, designed to provide students with essential knowledge, skills, and attitudes to help them develop personal and cultural awareness. This subject uses a transdisciplinary approach to teach civics, history, art and culture, and health and wellness. It aims to prepare students to understand and appreciate subjects like Music and Arts, Physical Education and Health, and Araling Panlipunan as they progress through their education.

The MATATAG curriculum’s focus on foundational skills in these new areas aims to streamline learning and ensure that students build a strong base in literacy and numeracy, setting them up for future success.
